Budgie · Fruit
Can budgies eat oranges?
Yes, in small amounts. Peeled orange is safe for budgies, but citrus is acidic and sugary, so offer a small piece occasionally and never the peel.
- Portion
- A piece of one segment about 1 cm (⅜ in) long
- How often
- Once or twice a week
- Sugar
- 9.4 g / 100 g
How to serve it
- Peel the orange and remove the pith and all pips
- Cut a small piece from one segment
- Serve plain fruit, never juice or canned orange in syrup
- Remove leftovers within a couple of hours
Why
Risks. Citrus peel, pips and leaves contain essential oils and citric acid that can irritate the gut. The flesh itself is acidic and sugary, so large amounts may upset digestion.
Benefits. Veterinary bird-care guides list oranges and other citrus as suitable fruits, and a juicy piece adds variety.
Questions owners ask 2
Can budgies eat mandarins, clementines or grapefruit?
Yes, with the same rules: peeled, pips removed, in small pieces and only occasionally.
Can I add orange juice to my budgie's water?
No. The AAV advises against putting juice in a bird's water because it encourages bacterial growth.
