Budgie · Fruit
Can budgies eat strawberries?
Yes, in small amounts. Strawberries are safe for budgies, but they are sugary and soft berries hold pesticide residues, so wash them well and offer only a small piece.
- Portion
- A piece about 1 cm (⅜ in) across, roughly a quarter of a small strawberry
- How often
- 2–3 times a week
- Sugar
- 4.9 g / 100 g
How to serve it
- Wash thoroughly under running water; choose organic if you can
- Remove the green cap
- Cut into small pieces
- Remove leftovers within a couple of hours
Why
Risks. VCA warns that birds are very sensitive to pesticides and other sprays, and berries are hard to wash thoroughly. Like other fruit, strawberries are high in sugar relative to what they offer a budgie.
Benefits. Strawberries add color and variety and most budgies find them appealing.
