Budgie · Fruit
Can budgies eat watermelon?
Yes, in small amounts. Watermelon is safe for budgies and refreshing, but it is mostly water and sugar, so a small cube now and then is plenty.
- Portion
- A cube about 1 cm (⅜ in) across
- How often
- Once or twice a week
- Sugar
- 6.2 g / 100 g
How to serve it
- Wash the rind before cutting so dirt on the skin is not carried into the flesh
- Cut away the rind
- Remove the seeds
- Serve a small cube and remove it within a couple of hours
Why
Risks. It offers little nutrition beyond sugar and water. Too much can crowd out more nutritious vegetables and make droppings more watery.
Benefits. Watermelon adds moisture and is well liked on warm days.
Questions owners ask 2
Can budgies eat watermelon seeds?
Watermelon seeds are not a known toxin like apple seeds or stone-fruit pits, but one veterinary school guide advises removing the seeds of all fruit, so it is simplest to take them out.
Can budgies eat watermelon rind?
The rind is not toxic, but it has little value and the outer skin can carry dirt and residues. Stick to the flesh.
