Budgie · Fruit
Can budgies eat grapes?
Yes, in small amounts. Avian vet guides list grapes as suitable for budgies, but they are very sugary, so offer a small piece only occasionally.
- Portion
- A quarter of a seedless grape
- How often
- Once or twice a week
- Sugar
- 15.5 g / 100 g
How to serve it
- Wash the grape well under running water
- Use seedless grapes or remove the seeds
- Cut into quarters
- Remove leftovers within a couple of hours
Why
Risks. Grapes are high in sugar for their size. Grapes and raisins can cause kidney damage in dogs, with tartaric acid the suspected cause; this has not been documented in birds, but it is another reason to keep portions small.
Benefits. Grapes are juicy and appealing, which can help encourage a budgie to try fresh food.
Questions owners ask 2
Aren't grapes poisonous to pets?
They are dangerous for dogs. Veterinary bird-care guides from VCA, the University of Florida and the RSPCA list grapes as suitable for pet birds, and no similar poisoning has been documented in birds, but small portions are still sensible.
Should I peel grapes for my budgie?
No, but wash them well, because the skin can hold pesticide residues.
