Budgie · Fruit
Can budgies eat apples?
Yes, in small amounts. Apple flesh is safe for budgies, but it is sugary and the seeds contain cyanide-releasing compounds, so core it and keep it an occasional treat.
- Portion
- One or two pieces about 1 cm (⅜ in) across, roughly a thumbnail-sized amount
- How often
- 2–3 times a week
- Sugar
- 10.4 g / 100 g
How to serve it
- Wash the apple well under running water
- Cut out the core and every seed
- Chop the flesh, skin on, into pieces about 1 cm (⅜ in) across
- Remove any uneaten apple within a couple of hours
Why
Risks. Apple seeds contain amygdalin, which can release cyanide, so avian vets advise removing them every time. The flesh is mostly sugar and water, and budgies are prone to obesity, so fruit should stay a small part of the diet.
Benefits. Apple adds fiber, moisture and variety, and many budgies enjoy picking at it.
Questions owners ask 2
Can budgies eat apple seeds?
No. Apple seeds contain cyanide-releasing compounds and should always be removed. If your budgie swallowed one, watch it closely and call your avian vet for advice, especially if it seems weak, fluffed up or has trouble breathing.
Do I need to peel apple for my budgie?
No, but wash the skin thoroughly, because birds are very sensitive to pesticide residues. Organic apples are a sensible choice when available.
