Can budgies eat pears?

Yes, in small amounts

Yes, in small amounts. Pear flesh is safe for budgies, but remove the core and seeds, as avian vets advise for fruit seeds, and keep it an occasional treat.

Portion
One or two pieces about 1 cm (⅜ in) across
How often
2–3 times a week
Sugar
9.8 g / 100 g

How to serve it

  1. Wash the pear well
  2. Cut out the core and all seeds
  3. Dice the ripe flesh into small pieces
  4. Remove leftovers within a couple of hours

Why

Risks. Pear seeds, like apple seeds, contain amygdalin, which can release cyanide; a veterinary school guide advises removing the seeds of all fruit. The flesh is sugary.

Benefits. Ripe pear is soft, juicy and easy for a budgie to eat, and it adds fiber.

Questions owners ask 1
