Can budgies eat pumpkin?

Yes — safe in normal portions

Yes. Pumpkin flesh is a nutritious, low-fat vegetable for budgies, rich in beta-carotene, and can be served raw or plainly cooked.

Portion
About a teaspoon (5 ml) of grated raw or mashed cooked pumpkin
How often
A few times a week, rotated with other vegetables
Sugar
2.8 g / 100 g

How to serve it

  1. Wash and peel the pumpkin and scoop out the stringy pulp and seeds
  2. Grate the raw flesh finely, or steam or bake it plain and let it cool
  3. Never use canned pie filling, which is sweetened and spiced
  4. Remove raw leftovers within a couple of hours and cooked ones within an hour

Why

Risks. Few risks when plain. Carved or decorative pumpkins that have been sitting out may be moldy and should not be fed.

Benefits. VCA lists pumpkin and squash among vegetables rich in vitamin A precursors, a nutrient often lacking in seed-based diets.

Questions owners ask 1

Can budgies eat pumpkin seeds?

Plain, unsalted pumpkin seeds are not toxic, but they are high in fat, so treat them as an occasional treat rather than a vegetable.
