Can budgies eat mushrooms?

Better not

Better not. Shop-bought mushrooms are not known to poison birds, but avian vets disagree on feeding them and wild mushrooms can be deadly. There is no need to offer them to budgies.

If your budgie already ate some

A nibble of a plain, shop-bought mushroom is not an emergency; watch for regurgitation, diarrhea or lethargy over the next day and call your vet if they appear. If your budgie ate a wild or unidentified mushroom, call your avian vet or an animal poison line immediately and take a sample with you.

How to serve it

  1. Offer other vegetables instead
  2. Never feed wild or foraged mushrooms
  3. Keep mushrooms growing in the garden, aviary or plant pots out of reach

Why

Risks. LafeberVet states that mushrooms safe for people are considered safe for pets, but some avian vets advise avoiding all mushrooms because they have been linked to digestive upset in parrots. Wild species such as Amanita and false morels are dangerously toxic, and cooking does not make false morels safe.

Questions owners ask 1

Are cooked mushrooms safer for budgies?

Cooking does not make toxic wild species safe; LafeberVet notes it does not remove the danger of false morels. For shop-bought mushrooms, there is simply no benefit that justifies offering them.
