Budgie · Vegetables
Can budgies eat sweet potatoes?
Yes, cooked and plain. Sweet potato is one of the best orange vegetables for budgies, rich in beta-carotene; serve it steamed or baked with nothing added.
- Portion
- About a teaspoon (5 ml) of mashed or finely diced cooked sweet potato
- How often
- 2–3 times a week, rotated with other vegetables
- Sugar
- 4.2 g / 100 g
How to serve it
- Peel and wash the sweet potato
- Steam, boil or bake until soft, with no salt, butter or oil
- Cool completely, then mash or dice finely
- Remove leftovers within an hour, as cooked food spoils faster
Why
Risks. It is starchier than most vegetables, so it should be one part of a varied mix. Seasoned, buttered or candied sweet potato and fries are not suitable.
Benefits. The AAV, VCA and the Royal Veterinary College all list sweet potato among recommended vegetables because it is rich in beta-carotene, which birds convert to vitamin A.
Questions owners ask 1
Can budgies eat raw sweet potato?
Most guidance recommends serving it cooked, plain and cooled. Cooked sweet potato is softer and easier for a small bird to eat.
