Can hamsters eat sweet potatoes?
Yes, in small amounts, cooked and plain. Sweet potato is not toxic, but it is starchy and sweet, so treat it as an occasional extra rather than an everyday vegetable.
- Portion
- A cube about 1 cm (⅜ in) for a Syrian; about 5 mm (¼ in) for a dwarf.
- How often
- Once a week.
- Dwarf hamsters
- Campbell's, Winter White, their hybrids and Chinese hamsters are prone to diabetes. Keep sweet potato to a pea-sized crumb no more than every week or two, or skip it, and rely mainly on low-sugar vegetables such as cucumber, broccoli and bell pepper.
- Sugar
- 4.2 g / 100 g
How to serve it
- Peel and wash
- Boil, steam or bake plain, with no butter, salt, sugar or spices
- Let it cool completely
- Cut a small cube and remove leftovers within a few hours
Why
Risks. High in starch and natural sugar, so frequent portions add calories. Raw sweet potato is harder to digest, so offer it cooked. It is not related to the ordinary potato, which should not be fed.
Benefits. Rich in beta-carotene and fibre.
Questions owners ask 2
Is sweet potato the same as potato?
No. Sweet potato is a different plant. Ordinary potatoes, especially raw, green or sprouted ones, should not be fed to hamsters.
Can hamsters eat sweet potato skin or fries?
Peel it to remove soil and residues. Sweet potato fries and crisps are cooked in oil and often salted, so they are not suitable.
