Can hamsters eat pumpkin?
Yes. Plain pumpkin flesh is safe for hamsters in small pieces, raw or cooked. Avoid pumpkin pie filling and anything with added sugar or spice.
- Portion
- A piece about 1–1.5 cm (⅜–⅝ in) across for a Syrian; about half that for a dwarf. Keep all fresh food together to about 1–2 teaspoons a day for a Syrian and about half that for a dwarf.
- How often
- One to three times a week, rotated with other vegetables.
- Dwarf hamsters
- Pumpkin is less sugary than fruit, but keep portions small (about 5 mm, ¼ in) for diabetes-prone dwarfs.
- Sugar
- 2.8 g / 100 g
How to serve it
- Wash, peel and remove the seeds and stringy pulp
- Cut a small cube of flesh; serve raw or cooked plain and cooled
- Never use pie filling, spiced or sweetened pumpkin
- Remove any uneaten piece, including from the hoard, within a few hours
Why
Risks. Low risk in small amounts; large portions can loosen droppings. Soft, cooked pumpkin spoils quickly if hoarded.
Benefits. Contains beta-carotene and fibre, and is moderately low in sugar compared with fruit.
Questions owners ask 2
Can hamsters eat pumpkin seeds?
Plain, unsalted pumpkin seeds can be an occasional treat, but they are high in fat: one seed for a Syrian, or a small piece of a shelled seed for a dwarf, once or twice a week at most.
Is canned pumpkin OK?
Plain canned pumpkin with nothing added is fine in a tiny amount. Pumpkin pie filling contains sugar and spices and should not be given.
