Can hamsters eat green beans?

Yes, in small amounts

Yes, in small amounts, ideally cooked. Green beans are listed as safe, but several vets warn against raw beans, so lightly cook them plain and cool them first.

Portion
A piece about 1 cm (⅜ in) long for a Syrian; about 5 mm (¼ in) for a dwarf.
How often
Once or twice a week.
Sugar
3.3 g / 100 g

How to serve it

  1. Wash and trim the ends
  2. Boil or steam plain until tender, with no salt, butter or seasoning
  3. Cool completely and cut small
  4. Remove any uneaten piece, including from the hoard, within a few hours

Why

Risks. Raw beans contain lectins that cooking destroys; levels are highest in dried beans such as kidney beans and lower in green beans. PetMD and two vet clinics list raw or uncooked beans as unsafe for hamsters, so cooking is the cautious choice.

Benefits. Low in sugar and calories, with fibre and vitamins.

Questions owners ask 2

Can hamsters eat raw green beans?

Woodgreen Pets Charity says both raw and lightly cooked green beans are safe, but because vets list raw beans among foods to avoid, we recommend cooking them first.

What about kidney beans, baked beans or other beans?

Never feed raw dried beans. Baked beans and beans in sauce contain sugar and salt and are also unsuitable.
