Budgie · Vegetables
Can budgies eat carrots?
Yes. Carrot is a good regular vegetable for budgies: crunchy, well liked and rich in beta-carotene, which helps prevent the vitamin A deficiency common on seed diets.
- Portion
- About a teaspoon (5 ml) of grated or finely diced carrot as part of the day's vegetables
- How often
- Daily or most days, rotated with other vegetables
- Sugar
- 4.7 g / 100 g
How to serve it
- Wash or peel the carrot
- Grate it or cut it into small dice or thin matchsticks
- Serve raw, or lightly steamed and cooled, with nothing added
- Remove leftovers within a couple of hours
Why
Risks. Carrot is sweeter than leafy vegetables, so it works best as one part of a varied mix rather than the only vegetable.
Benefits. The AAV and VCA name carrots among orange vegetables high in beta-carotene, a vitamin A precursor that seeds lack, and the Royal Veterinary College recommends carrot for budgies.
Questions owners ask 2
Can budgies eat carrot tops?
Yes. VCA lists carrot tops among suitable foods; wash them well and chop finely.
Is raw or cooked carrot better?
Raw is fine and keeps more nutrients, as cooking can deplete some foods of their value. Lightly steamed carrot is also fine.
