Can cockatiels eat mushrooms?

Better not

Better not. Edible mushrooms are not proven toxic to cockatiels, but opinion among avian vets is divided, and wild mushrooms can be fatal, so it is simplest to leave them out.

If your cockatiel already ate some

If your cockatiel pecked at a plain cultivated mushroom, watch its appetite and droppings for a day and call your vet if anything changes. If it ate a wild mushroom, treat it as an emergency: call your avian vet or a poison line now and bring the mushroom for identification.

How to serve it

  1. Choose other vegetables instead
  2. Do not feed wild or foraged mushrooms
  3. Check the aviary, garden and house plants for mushrooms and remove them

Why

Risks. Some sources consider shop-bought mushrooms safe while others advise avoiding them because of digestive upset in parrots. Toxic wild mushrooms, including Amanita and false morels, can cause severe or fatal poisoning.

Questions owners ask 1

My cockatiel ate a mushroom from the lawn. What should I do?

Call your avian vet or an animal poison line immediately. Some wild mushrooms are deadly, and identification matters, so bring a sample.
