Cockatiel · Vegetables
Can cockatiels eat cabbage?
Yes. Cabbage is safe for cockatiels as one of several vegetables. Darker leaves offer more nutrients than the pale heart.
- Portion
- About a tablespoon (15 ml) of finely shredded leaf as part of the day's vegetables
- How often
- A few times a week, rotated with other vegetables
- Sugar
- 3.2 g / 100 g
How to serve it
- Wash the leaves
- Pick darker outer leaves where possible
- Shred or chop finely
- Take away leftovers after a couple of hours
Why
Risks. Like other cabbage-family plants it contains goitrogens, which can interfere with iodine use if fed in very large amounts, so rotate it rather than feeding it every day.
Benefits. Cabbage gives crunch, fiber and variety, and VCA lists it among suitable vegetables for pet birds.
