Can hamsters eat sunflower seeds?
Yes, in small amounts. Plain, unsalted sunflower seeds are a classic hamster treat, but they are about half fat, so one or two a few times a week is plenty.
- Portion
- 1–2 seeds for a Syrian; 1 seed for a dwarf.
- How often
- 2–3 times a week at most
- Dwarf hamsters
- Dwarf hamsters are small and prone to diabetes, which extra weight does not help. One seed at a time, a few times a week, is enough.
- Sugar
- 2.6 g / 100 g
- Fat
- 51.5 g / 100 g
How to serve it
- Use plain raw or dry-roasted seeds with no salt or flavouring
- Shelled or in-shell seeds are both fine
- Hand-feed or hide them rather than adding them to the bowl
- Cut back if the main food is already a seed-heavy mix
Why
Risks. Sunflower seeds are about half fat by weight. Hamsters readily pick seeds over pellets, and VCA notes that seeds are high in fat and poor in overall nutrition, and that hamsters are prone to obesity. Salted or flavoured seeds add sodium and seasonings.
Benefits. Hamsters love them, which makes them useful for hand-taming, and they contain protein and vitamin E.
Questions owners ask 2
Can hamsters eat salted sunflower seeds?
No. Choose unsalted, unflavoured seeds. Snack-style seeds are often heavily salted or coated in seasoning.
My hamster only eats the sunflower seeds from its mix. Is that a problem?
Yes, it can be. Selective eating of seeds leads to an unbalanced, high-fat diet. Vets and welfare charities recommend a pelleted food as the main diet, with seeds only as treats; ask your vet how to switch gradually.
