Budgie · Grains, seeds & nuts
Can budgies eat sunflower seeds?
Yes, in small amounts. Sunflower seeds are very high in fat and low in calcium, and budgies are prone to obesity and fatty tumours, so treat them as a rare reward.
- Portion
- One or two hulled kernels, or one seed in its shell
- How often
- Once or twice a week, ideally as a training reward
- Sugar
- 2.6 g / 100 g
- Fat
- 51.5 g / 100 g
How to serve it
- Use plain, raw, unsalted seeds
- Never use roasted, salted or flavoured snack seeds
- Break a kernel into pieces for a small budgie
- Store seeds dry and discard any that smell rancid or look mouldy
Why
Risks. Sunflower seeds are high in fat, low in calcium and short of key amino acids. Birds pick them out ahead of healthier foods, and high-fat seed diets are linked to obesity, fatty liver and lipomas, which budgies commonly develop.
Benefits. Sunflower kernels provide vitamin E and energy and are highly motivating as training rewards.
Questions owners ask 2
Are sunflower seeds bad for budgies?
They are not toxic, but they are a high-fat treat. One or two kernels, once or twice a week, is plenty for a budgie; a mix that is mostly sunflower is not a suitable diet.
Can budgies eat salted sunflower seeds?
No. Snack seeds are salted or flavoured, and small birds are sensitive to salt.
