Can budgies eat pumpkin seeds?

Yes, in small amounts

Yes, in small amounts. Plain raw pumpkin seeds are not harmful, but like other oily seeds they are rich in fat, so a budgie needs only a fragment now and then.

Portion

How often

Fat

How to serve it

  1. Use plain, raw, unsalted seeds, either from a fresh pumpkin or shelled pepitas
  2. If taken from a pumpkin, rinse off the pulp and use the same day or dry them fully
  3. Never use roasted, salted or spiced snack seeds
  4. Break into budgie-sized pieces

Why

Risks. They are energy-dense and fatty, which matters for a small bird prone to obesity and lipomas. Seeds sold as snacks are often roasted with salt or spices, and damp seeds can go mouldy.

Benefits. Pumpkin seeds contain protein, zinc, magnesium and unsaturated fat.

Questions owners ask 2

Can budgies eat pumpkin seeds with the shell on?

They can pick at a whole seed, but the hull is tough for a small beak. A shelled seed broken into pieces is easier.

Are pumpkin seeds better than sunflower seeds for budgies?

Both are fatty treats. Neither should be a regular part of a budgie's diet; one small piece now and then is enough.
