Can budgies eat oats?

Yes, in small amounts

Yes, in small amounts. Plain oats are safe for budgies, but they are starchy and low in calcium, so keep them an occasional extra rather than a staple.

Portion
About 1/2 teaspoon of plain rolled oats or cooked plain oatmeal
How often
Once or twice a week
Sugar
1 g / 100 g
Fat
6.5 g / 100 g

How to serve it

  1. Use plain oats with no sugar, salt, flavouring or milk
  2. Offer a small pinch of dry rolled oats, or cook them in water
  3. Let cooked oats cool to lukewarm or room temperature
  4. Remove cooked oats within a few hours, before they spoil

Why

Risks. Grains are energy-dense and poor in calcium, and budgies are prone to obesity. Instant or flavoured oats often contain sugar and salt, and damp cooked grain left in the cage can grow bacteria or mould.

Benefits. Oats supply energy, some protein and fibre, and a pinch can add variety.

Questions owners ask 2

Can budgies eat raw oats?

Yes. Plain dry rolled oats are fine in a small pinch; they do not need cooking.

Can budgies have porridge made with milk?

No. Make it with water only. Birds digest lactose poorly, and sweetened porridge adds sugar they do not need.
