Can hamsters eat oats?
Yes, in small amounts. Plain rolled oats are a common grain in hamster mixes and fine as a small extra. Keep them to a few flakes for dwarf hamsters, which are prone to diabetes.
- Portion
- About ½ teaspoon of plain rolled oats for a Syrian; a small pinch (a few flakes) for a dwarf.
- How often
- 2–3 times a week
- Dwarf hamsters
- Campbell's, Winter White, hybrid and Chinese hamsters are prone to diabetes. Keep oats to a few flakes once or twice a week, and never use sweetened oat products.
- Sugar
- 1 g / 100 g
- Fat
- 6.5 g / 100 g
How to serve it
- Use plain, uncooked rolled or whole oats
- Avoid instant oat sachets, granola and flavoured or sweetened oats
- Serve dry, with no milk, sugar, honey or syrup
- Scatter a few flakes to encourage foraging
Why
Risks. Oats are mainly starch, so large amounts add calories and can crowd out the balanced pellet diet. Instant and flavoured oat products may contain sugar, salt or dried fruit.
Benefits. Oats supply starch for energy plus some fibre and protein, and scattered flakes encourage natural foraging.
Questions owners ask 2
Can hamsters eat porridge or oatmeal?
Plain oats cooked in water and cooled are not harmful in a tiny amount, but soft porridge spoils quickly if hoarded. Never use porridge made with milk, sugar, honey or syrup.
Can hamsters eat granola or oat bars?
No. These usually contain sugar, honey, syrup, chocolate or dried fruit, and bars can be sticky. Stick to plain rolled oats.
