Can hamsters eat pasta?
Yes, in small amounts. VCA lists pasta among occasional hamster treats. Offer it plain, with no sauce, salt, oil, garlic or cheese.
- Portion
- One or two small pieces of plain cooked pasta, about 1 cm (⅜ in), for a Syrian; one tiny piece for a dwarf.
- How often
- Once a week
- Dwarf hamsters
- For diabetes-prone dwarfs, keep pasta to a tiny piece now and then, or skip it.
- Sugar
- 0.6 g / 100 g
How to serve it
- Cook in unsalted water with no oil
- Let it cool
- Cut into small pieces
- Remove leftovers the same day
Why
Risks. Pasta is starchy and adds calories without much nutrition. Leftover pasta from human meals usually carries salt, oil, sauce, onion, garlic or cheese, which are not suitable.
Benefits. A bland carbohydrate treat; wholewheat pasta adds a little fibre.
Questions owners ask 2
Can hamsters eat uncooked pasta?
Cooked plain pasta is the safer choice. Dry pasta snaps into hard, sharp shards that could scratch or pierce the cheek pouches, so if you offer it dry at all, use a small, smooth piece and count it as a treat.
Can hamsters eat pasta with sauce?
No. Sauces usually contain salt, sugar, oil, onion, garlic or cheese. Only plain pasta is suitable.
