Can hamsters eat rice?
Yes, in small amounts. A few grains of plain cooked rice are not harmful, but rice adds starch and little else, spoils fast when hoarded, and must never be seasoned.
- Portion
- 3–5 grains of plain cooked rice for a Syrian; 1–2 grains for a dwarf.
- How often
- Once a week at most
- Dwarf hamsters
- For diabetes-prone dwarfs (Campbell's, Winter White, hybrids and Chinese hamsters), rice is best skipped or limited to a single grain now and then.
- Sugar
- 0.2 g / 100 g
How to serve it
- Cook in plain water with no salt, oil, butter or stock
- Let it cool completely
- Offer a few separate grains, not a sticky clump
- Remove leftovers within a few hours, as cooked rice spoils quickly
Why
Risks. Cooked rice is starchy, low in fibre and goes off quickly if stored in the nest or cheek pouches. Leftover rice from human meals often contains salt, oil, soy sauce, onion or garlic, which are not suitable for pets.
Benefits. A bland, easily digested starch. It offers little that a pellet diet does not already provide.
Questions owners ask 2
Can hamsters eat fried rice or leftover takeaway rice?
No. Fried and takeaway rice usually contain oil, salt, soy sauce, onion or garlic. Only plain, unseasoned rice is suitable.
Is brown rice better than white rice for hamsters?
Plain brown rice has a little more fibre, but both are starchy foods that should stay a rare extra.
