Budgie · Grains, seeds & nuts
Can budgies eat rice?
Yes, in small amounts. Plain cooked rice, especially brown rice, is safe for budgies. Keep it a small side dish so it does not crowd out pellets and vegetables.
- Portion
- About 1/2 teaspoon of cooked rice (a thumbnail-sized amount)
- How often
- Once or twice a week
- Sugar
- 0.2 g / 100 g
How to serve it
- Cook in plain water with no salt, butter, oil or seasoning
- Let it cool to room temperature
- Mix with finely chopped vegetables if you like
- Remove leftovers within a few hours, as cooked rice spoils quickly
Why
Risks. Rice is mostly starch and low in calcium, so large amounts dilute a balanced diet. Cooked rice left at room temperature can grow bacteria, and rice cooked for people is often salted, buttered or fried.
Benefits. Brown or wild rice provides energy, some fibre and B vitamins, and mixing it with chopped vegetables can encourage a budgie to try new foods.
Questions owners ask 2
Is white rice as good as brown rice for budgies?
White rice is safe but less nutritious. Brown or wild rice keeps more fibre and B vitamins.
Can I give my budgie leftover rice from dinner?
Only if it was cooked completely plain. Fried rice, seasoned rice or rice cooked in stock can contain salt, oil, onion or garlic.
