Budgie · Grains, seeds & nuts
Can budgies eat pasta?
Yes, in small amounts. Plain cooked pasta is safe for budgies and many enjoy it, but take their portion out before any sauce, salt, butter or cheese goes on.
- Portion
- One or two pieces of a small pasta shape, or about 1/2 teaspoon
- How often
- Once or twice a week
- Sugar
- 0.6 g / 100 g
How to serve it
- Cook in unsalted water
- Take the budgie's portion out before adding sauce, butter, oil or cheese
- Cut into small pieces and let it cool
- Remove leftovers within a few hours
Why
Risks. Pasta is starchy and low in calcium and vitamin A, so it should stay a small extra. The real dangers are the additions: salt, butter, oil, garlic, onion and cheese sauces.
Benefits. Plain pasta gives energy and a soft texture birds often accept readily, and wholewheat pasta adds fibre. Veterinary guides suggest moist foods such as pasta as a carrier for crushed pellets when converting a bird from seeds.
Questions owners ask 2
Can budgies eat spaghetti with sauce?
No. Pasta sauces usually contain onion, garlic, salt and oil. Offer a plain noodle taken out before the sauce is added.
Is wholewheat pasta better for budgies?
Yes. It has more fibre, although either kind should remain an occasional extra.
