Can hamsters eat millet?
Yes, in small amounts. Millet is a small seed found in many hamster mixes. It is fine as a treat, but seeds should be limited so they do not replace the balanced pellets.
- Portion
- A small pinch of loose millet, or a 1–2 cm (½–¾ in) piece of millet spray, for a Syrian; about half that for a dwarf.
- How often
- 1–2 times a week
- Dwarf hamsters
- Keep millet to a few grains now and then for Campbell's, Winter White, hybrid and Chinese hamsters, and avoid honey- or molasses-coated millet treats completely.
How to serve it
- Use plain millet or millet spray, not seed sticks bound with honey or molasses
- Scatter or hide it to encourage foraging
- Count it as a treat, not part of the main ration
Why
Risks. Millet is mostly starch. Hamsters that fill up on seeds may skip their pellets, which can lead to an unbalanced diet and weight gain. Seed sticks and bars are often bound with honey or molasses, adding sugar.
Benefits. Encourages natural foraging, and millet is much lower in fat than oil seeds such as sunflower.
Questions owners ask 1
