Can hamsters eat popcorn?
Yes, in small amounts. VCA lists unsalted popcorn as a hamster treat. It must be plain and air-popped, with no butter, salt, sugar or flavouring, and hard kernels removed.
- Portion
- One or two plain popped pieces for a Syrian; one small piece for a dwarf.
- How often
- Once a week at most
- Dwarf hamsters
- Popcorn is starch from corn. For diabetes-prone dwarfs, keep it to a single small piece now and then.
How to serve it
- Air-pop plain kernels with no oil, butter, salt or sugar
- Do not use microwave-bag, caramel, cheese or buttered popcorn
- Remove unpopped and half-popped kernels and loose hulls
- Break into small pieces
Why
Risks. Buttered, salted, caramel or flavoured popcorn adds fat, sodium and sugar. Hard unpopped kernels and sharp hull fragments are a concern because sharp pieces of food can occasionally pierce the cheek pouches.
Benefits. A light treat that hamsters enjoy carrying and foraging for.
Questions owners ask 2
Can hamsters eat salted or buttered popcorn?
No. Salt and butter make it unsuitable. Only plain, air-popped popcorn is appropriate, and only a piece or two.
Can hamsters eat unpopped popcorn kernels?
Better not. They are very hard, offer no benefit and could injure the cheek pouches. Remove them before offering popcorn.
