Can hamsters eat bread?

Yes, in small amounts

Yes, in small amounts. Vets list plain whole wheat bread as a hamster treat. Keep it tiny and dry, and never offer bread with butter, spreads, garlic or raisins.

Portion
A cube about 1 cm (⅜ in) across of plain wholemeal bread for a Syrian; a crumb about half that size for a dwarf.
How often
Once a week at most
Dwarf hamsters
Diabetes-prone dwarfs are better off with a crumb at most, or none. Skip white, sweet or enriched breads entirely.
Sugar
4.3 g / 100 g

How to serve it

  1. Choose plain wholemeal (whole wheat) bread
  2. Offer it dry or lightly toasted rather than soft and doughy
  3. Add no butter, jam, peanut butter or other spreads
  4. Remove uneaten pieces before they go mouldy

Why

Risks. Bread is starchy and often salty, soft bread can form a doughy lump in the cheek pouches, and hoarded bread goes mouldy. Garlic bread, raisin bread and sweet or chocolate spreads add real risks. Raw yeast dough is dangerous because it expands and produces alcohol.

Benefits. Wholemeal bread supplies some fibre and carbohydrate and is a handy hand-feeding treat for taming.

Questions owners ask 3

Can hamsters eat white bread?

A crumb is not harmful, but white bread is more refined and lower in fibre than wholemeal. If you offer bread at all, choose plain wholemeal.

Can hamsters eat bread with butter or peanut butter?

No. Spreads add fat, salt and sometimes sugar or sweeteners, and sticky spreads can cling inside the cheek pouches.

Can hamsters eat raw bread dough?

No. Raw yeast dough can expand in the stomach, and the yeast produces alcohol, which is toxic to pets. Contact a vet if your hamster eats some.
