Cockatiel · Grains, seeds & nuts
Can cockatiels eat popcorn?
Better not. Popcorn as people eat it is salty, buttery or sugary, which cockatiels should not have. Plain air-popped popcorn is not toxic, but it adds nothing useful.
- Portion
- Not recommended. If offered at all, one or two plain, fully popped pieces with no salt, butter or oil
- How often
- Rarely, if at all
If your cockatiel already ate some
A piece of plain popcorn needs no action. After salted, buttered or sweet popcorn, provide fresh water and watch for heavy drinking, watery droppings, weakness or wobbling, and call an avian vet if they appear or if a large amount was eaten.
How to serve it
- Do not share cinema, microwave, caramel or flavoured popcorn
- If you offer any, air-pop plain kernels with no fat or salt
- Pick out unpopped kernels and hulls
- Offer only a piece or two and remove leftovers
Why
Risks. Salted and buttered popcorn gives a small bird a load of salt and fat; caramel and kettle corn add sugar. Plain popcorn is mostly starch with little nutritional value, and unpopped kernels are hard.
Questions owners ask 1
Why do some sites say popcorn is fine for cockatiels?
Plain air-popped popcorn is not poisonous, so some keepers use it as a treat. Veterinary sources group popcorn with salty snacks to avoid, and it offers little nutrition, so we suggest other treats.
