Can cockatiels eat sunflower seeds?

Yes, in small amounts

Yes, in small amounts. Cockatiels love sunflower seeds, but they are fatty and low in calcium, and cockatiels that fill up on them often become overweight or short of nutrients.

Portion
Two to four seeds
How often
A few times a week, used as training rewards
Sugar
2.6 g / 100 g
Fat
51.5 g / 100 g

How to serve it

  1. Use plain, raw, unsalted seeds
  2. Avoid roasted, salted or flavoured snack seeds
  3. Hand them out one at a time as rewards rather than in the bowl
  4. Discard seeds that smell rancid or look mouldy

Why

Risks. Seed mixes heavy in sunflower are high in fat and low in calcium and vitamin A. Cockatiels are prone to calcium and vitamin A deficiency, fatty liver disease and lipomas, and they tend to pick sunflower over healthier food.

Benefits. Sunflower seeds are energy-rich and contain vitamin E; their high appeal makes them effective training rewards.

Questions owners ask 2

My cockatiel's seed mix is mostly sunflower. Is that a problem?

Yes, if it is the main food. Veterinary sources describe sunflower-heavy diets as high in fat and deficient in calcium and other nutrients. Talk to an avian vet about gradually moving to pellets.

Black or striped sunflower seeds for cockatiels?

Either is fine as an occasional treat; the fat content matters more than the type.
