Cockatiel · Protein & dairy
Can cockatiels eat mealworms?
Yes, in small amounts. Cockatiels can have the odd mealworm as a protein treat, but insects are poor in calcium, a nutrient cockatiels often lack, so keep them occasional.
- Portion
- Two or three mealworms, live or dried
- How often
- Once a week at most
How to serve it
- Buy mealworms sold as animal food, never wild-caught insects
- Rehydrate dried mealworms briefly in warm water if you like
- Hand-feed or place in a foraging toy
- Remove any uneaten live mealworms so they do not escape into the cage
Why
Risks. Insects are poor calcium sources, and cockatiels are prone to calcium deficiency and egg-binding. Dried mealworms are calorie-dense, and pellet-fed cockatiels do not need extra animal protein.
Benefits. Mealworms are high in protein and make an interesting foraging item.
Questions owners ask 1
Can mealworms help my cockatiel during moult?
A few can add protein, but a balanced pellet diet already meets most needs. Ask your avian vet before adding extra protein for moult or breeding.
Sources & method 4
No source we found covers mealworms for cockatiels specifically, so this verdict is reasoned from general feeding guidance and nutrition data. Confidence: medium. Rated on the JOMIZOO Feeding Scale; when good sources disagree we choose the more cautious level.
