Can cockatiels eat eggs?

Yes, in small amounts

Yes, in small amounts. Cockatiels can have a little hard-boiled egg as a nutritious treat. It is rich, so keep portions small and always cook it fully.

Portion
About 1 teaspoon of chopped hard-boiled egg
How often
Once or twice a week; your avian vet may suggest more for breeding or moulting birds
Sugar
1.1 g / 100 g
Fat
10.6 g / 100 g

How to serve it

  1. Hard-boil until the yolk is completely set
  2. Let it cool
  3. Chop finely, with a little finely crushed boiled shell if you like
  4. Serve with no salt, butter or seasoning
  5. Take away leftovers within an hour or two

Why

Risks. Yolk is fatty and cholesterol-rich, so too much adds unwanted calories. Raw egg can carry Salmonella and contains a biotin-binding protein, and cooked egg spoils fast at room temperature.

Benefits. Egg is an excellent protein source, and hard-boiled egg with shell provides calcium, which is useful for cockatiels, a species prone to calcium deficiency.

Questions owners ask 2

Is egg good for a cockatiel that is laying eggs?

Egg can help supply protein and, with shell, calcium, but a laying hen needs a vet-guided plan. Chronic laying depletes calcium and is linked to egg-binding in cockatiels.

Can cockatiels eat egg shells?

Boiled, finely crushed shell is a recognised calcium source for pet birds. Never offer raw shell.
