Can budgies eat eggs?
Yes, in small amounts. Hard-boiled egg is a good protein source that avian vets suggest for pet birds, but the yolk is rich, so offer a small crumbled portion.
- Portion
- About 1/2 teaspoon of chopped hard-boiled egg (a thumbnail-sized amount)
- How often
- Once or twice a week; your avian vet may suggest more for breeding or moulting birds
- Sugar
- 1.1 g / 100 g
- Fat
- 10.6 g / 100 g
How to serve it
- Boil the egg until both white and yolk are completely firm
- Cool it fully
- Chop or mash finely; a little finely crushed boiled shell adds calcium
- Add no salt, butter, oil or mayonnaise
- Remove leftovers within an hour or two
Why
Risks. Egg yolk is rich in fat and cholesterol, so large or frequent portions add calories budgies do not need. Raw or undercooked egg can carry Salmonella, and cooked egg spoils quickly if left in the cage.
Benefits. Egg provides high-quality protein, which birds need more of during moult and egg laying, and cooked egg with its shell is a calcium source for pet birds.
Questions owners ask 2
Can budgies eat raw egg?
No. Always cook egg until firm. Raw egg can carry Salmonella, and raw egg white contains a protein that binds the B vitamin biotin.
Can budgies eat scrambled egg?
Yes, if it is cooked through with no butter, oil, milk or salt. Hard-boiling is simplest.
