Can hamsters eat eggs?
Yes, in small amounts. PDSA and Blue Cross list boiled egg as a good occasional protein treat for hamsters. Always cook it fully and serve it plain.
- Portion
- A piece of hard-boiled egg about the size of your hamster's ear, roughly 1 cm (⅜ in), for a Syrian; about half that for a dwarf.
- How often
- Once or twice a week
- Sugar
- 1.1 g / 100 g
- Fat
- 10.6 g / 100 g
How to serve it
- Hard-boil until both white and yolk are firm
- Cool and peel, then offer white, yolk or a little of both
- Add no salt, butter, mayonnaise or seasoning
- Remove any uneaten egg within a few hours
Why
Risks. Raw or undercooked egg can carry Salmonella, and raw egg white contains a protein (avidin) that binds the B vitamin biotin, so only fully cooked egg should be used. Yolk is rich in fat, and cooked egg spoils quickly if hoarded.
Benefits. Egg is an easily digested source of high-quality protein that adds variety alongside the pellet diet.
Questions owners ask 2
Can hamsters eat raw egg?
No. Raw egg can carry Salmonella, and raw egg white contains a protein that binds the B vitamin biotin. Always hard-boil the egg.
Can hamsters eat scrambled egg?
Plain scrambled egg cooked without butter, oil, milk or salt is similar to boiled egg and fine in a small piece. Most scrambled egg made for people contains butter and salt, so boiled is simpler.
