Can hamsters eat mealworms?
Yes, in small amounts. PDSA and Blue Cross list mealworms as a good protein treat for hamsters. They are rich in fat, so one or two a few times a week is enough.
- Portion
- 1–2 dried mealworms for a Syrian; 1 for a dwarf.
- How often
- 2–3 times a week
How to serve it
- Buy mealworms sold as pet food or live food
- Dried or freeze-dried mealworms are the simplest option
- If you use live mealworms, hand-feed one at a time and never leave live insects loose in the enclosure
- Check the nest so live worms are not being stored
Why
Risks. Mealworms are high in fat, so too many contribute to weight gain. PetMD advises against live prey because hoarded live insects can injure a hamster or infest the enclosure.
Benefits. A natural protein source; wild hamsters eat insects, and hand-feeding mealworms is enriching and helps build trust.
Questions owners ask 2
Are live or dried mealworms better for hamsters?
Dried mealworms are easier and cannot escape or bite. If you prefer live ones, hand-feed them one at a time so none end up stored alive in the nest.
How many mealworms can a hamster eat?
A Syrian can have one or two a few times a week, and a dwarf one. Their high fat content is the reason to keep numbers low.
