Budgie · Protein & dairy
Can budgies eat mealworms?
Yes, in small amounts. A mealworm is not harmful to a budgie, but insects are poor in calcium, dried ones are calorie-dense, and pellet-fed budgies do not need them.
- Portion
- One or two mealworms, live or dried
- How often
- Once a week at most
How to serve it
- Buy mealworms sold as animal food from a reliable supplier
- Never collect wild insects, which may carry pesticides or parasites
- Soak dried mealworms briefly in warm water if you like
- Offer by hand or in a dish so you know how many were eaten
Why
Risks. Insects, including mealworms, are poor sources of calcium, and dried insects pack a lot of calories into a small piece. Budgies are mainly seed and plant eaters, so regular insect treats add energy without improving a pellet-based diet.
Benefits. Mealworms are rich in protein and can be a novel foraging treat.
Questions owners ask 2
Do budgies need mealworms for protein?
No. A good pellet diet provides enough protein for a pet budgie. Mealworms are optional.
Are dried mealworms better than live ones for budgies?
Either is fine in tiny amounts. Dried ones are more concentrated, so one dried mealworm is plenty.
Sources & method 3
No source we found covers mealworms for budgies specifically, so this verdict is reasoned from general feeding guidance and nutrition data. Confidence: medium. Rated on the JOMIZOO Feeding Scale; when good sources disagree we choose the more cautious level.
