Can budgies eat tofu?

Yes, in small amounts

Yes, in small amounts. Plain tofu is a safe, lactose-free protein for budgies. Use unseasoned tofu and offer only a small cube now and then.

Portion
A cube about 1 cm (⅜ in) across
How often
Once or twice a week
Fat
8.7 g / 100 g

How to serve it

  1. Use plain firm tofu with no marinade, salt, soy sauce or spices
  2. Rinse and pat dry
  3. Cut a small cube or crumble it; serve it as it comes or plainly steamed
  4. Remove leftovers within a couple of hours, as tofu spoils quickly

Why

Risks. Tofu has no known toxicity for birds, but it is a processed food. Flavoured, fried or marinated tofu brings salt, oil and seasonings such as garlic or onion, and like any moist protein food it spoils if left out.

Benefits. Tofu provides plant protein, and tofu set with calcium sulfate also contains calcium.

Questions owners ask 2

Can budgies eat flavoured or fried tofu?

No. Marinades and frying add salt, oil and seasonings. Only plain tofu is suitable.

Is tofu a good protein source for budgies?

It is a safe occasional extra, but pellet-fed budgies do not need added protein; vegetables should come first among fresh foods.
