Can budgies eat chicken?

Yes, in small amounts

Yes, in small amounts. A shred of plain cooked chicken is safe for budgies now and then, but they are seed and plant eaters and get the protein they need from pellets.

Portion
One or two small shreds, together about the size of a pea
How often
Once a week at most
Sugar
0 g / 100 g

How to serve it

  1. Use lean breast meat cooked right through
  2. Remove skin and bones; add no salt, seasoning, oil or sauce
  3. Cool and shred finely
  4. Never offer raw or undercooked chicken
  5. Remove leftovers within an hour or two

Why

Risks. Meat is not a natural part of a budgie's diet, and meat-heavy diets are discouraged for plant-eating parrots; they have been linked to iron storage disease in grey parrots. Raw chicken can carry Salmonella and E. coli, and skin or seasoned meat adds fat and salt.

Benefits. Lean chicken provides protein, which birds need more of during moult and breeding.

Questions owners ask 2

Do budgies need meat?

No. Budgies are mainly seed and plant eaters, and a good pellet diet covers their protein needs. Meat is an optional, occasional extra.

Can budgies eat chicken nuggets or seasoned chicken?

No. Breaded, fried or seasoned chicken contains salt, fat and often onion or garlic. Only plain, unseasoned cooked meat is suitable.
