Cockatiel · Protein & dairy
Can cockatiels eat chicken?
Yes, in small amounts. Veterinary guides note some cockatiels enjoy a little lean cooked meat. Offer an occasional shred of plain cooked chicken, never raw, seasoned or fatty meat.
- Portion
- A few small shreds, no more than about 1 teaspoon in total
- How often
- Once a week at most
- Sugar
- 0 g / 100 g
How to serve it
- Use lean, skinless breast meat cooked through
- Remove all bones
- Add no salt, seasoning, oil or sauce
- Shred finely and serve cool
- Clear away leftovers within an hour or two
Why
Risks. Cockatiels are mainly seed and plant eaters, and a meat-heavy diet is discouraged in plant-eating parrots because it has been linked to iron storage disease. Raw chicken can carry Salmonella and E. coli, and fatty or seasoned meat adds fat and salt.
Benefits. Plain chicken adds high-quality protein, which can be useful during moult.
Questions owners ask 2
Is it strange for a cockatiel to eat chicken?
Cockatiels are not meat eaters by nature, but a small amount of lean cooked meat is safe. It should stay a rare extra, not a regular part of the diet.
Can cockatiels have chicken bones?
No. Offer only boneless meat; cooked bones can splinter.
