Can hamsters eat raspberries?
Yes, in small amounts. Raspberries are not known to be harmful to hamsters and are relatively low in sugar for a fruit, but treat them like other berries: an occasional small piece.
- Portion
- One or two of the little beads (drupelets), up to about a quarter of a berry, for a Syrian; one bead for a dwarf.
- How often
- Once a week (twice at most) for a Syrian; no more than once every two weeks for a dwarf.
- Dwarf hamsters
- Campbell's, Winter White, their hybrids and Chinese hamsters are prone to diabetes. Give raspberry only rarely, as a 5 mm (¼ in) taste no more than once every two weeks, or skip fruit and use a low-sugar vegetable such as cucumber as a treat. Roborovskis are less studied, but they are tiny, so keep their portions just as small.
- Sugar
- 4.4 g / 100 g
How to serve it
- Wash gently
- Check for mould; raspberries spoil quickly
- Break off a small piece
- Remove any uneaten piece, including from the hoard, within a few hours
Why
Risks. No hamster-specific problems are documented. As with other fruit, too much can cause loose droppings and weight gain, and mouldy berries should never be fed.
Benefits. Provide fibre and are relatively low in sugar compared with most fruit.
Questions owners ask 2

The tiny seeds inside raspberries cannot practically be removed and are eaten with the fruit, as with strawberries. The advice to remove seeds applies to larger pips and stones.
Can hamsters eat raspberry leaves?
We have not found reliable veterinary guidance on raspberry leaves for hamsters, so it is best to stick to the fruit.
