Can hamsters eat coconut?

Yes, in small amounts

Yes, but only a tiny amount now and then. Fresh coconut flesh is not toxic, but it is very high in fat, and hamsters easily become overweight.

Portion
A thin shaving about 5 mm (¼ in) across for a Syrian; best skipped for dwarf species (see the dwarf note).
How often
Once every one to two weeks at most.
Dwarf hamsters
Research in diabetes-prone Chinese hamsters found that reducing dietary fat or calories helped prevent diabetes developing, so it is best to skip coconut flesh for Campbell's, Winter White, hybrid and Chinese hamsters.
Sugar
6.2 g / 100 g
Fat
33.5 g / 100 g

How to serve it

  1. Use fresh or plain unsweetened coconut only
  2. Offer a thin shaving of the white flesh
  3. Do not offer coconut milk, cream, oil or sweetened desiccated coconut
  4. Remove any uneaten piece, including from the hoard, within a few hours

Why

Risks. Coconut flesh is mostly fat and calorie-dense. Hamsters are prone to obesity, and vets recommend low-fat treats.

Benefits. Adds novelty. A clean, untreated coconut shell also makes a safe gnawing item or hide.

Questions owners ask 2

Can hamsters have a coconut shell?

Yes. PDSA lists coconut shells among safe things for hamsters to gnaw on. Make sure it is clean and untreated.

Is coconut water or coconut milk OK?

No. Your hamster only needs fresh water. Coconut milk is very fatty, and coconut water adds sugar.
