Can hamsters eat peaches?
Yes, in small amounts. Peach flesh is listed as safe for hamsters, but the stone, leaves and stem contain cyanide-releasing compounds, and the fruit is sugary.
- Portion
- A piece about 1 cm (⅜ in) across, no bigger than your hamster's ear, for a Syrian; about 5 mm (¼ in) for a dwarf.
- How often
- Once a week (twice at most) for a Syrian; no more than once every two weeks for a dwarf.
- Dwarf hamsters
- Campbell's, Winter White, their hybrids and Chinese hamsters are prone to diabetes. Give peach only rarely, as a 5 mm (¼ in) taste no more than once every two weeks, or skip fruit and use a low-sugar vegetable such as cucumber as a treat. Roborovskis are less studied, but they are tiny, so keep their portions just as small.
- Sugar
- 8.4 g / 100 g
How to serve it
- Wash well
- Remove the stone, stalk and any leaves
- Cut a small piece of ripe flesh; washed skin can stay on
- Remove any uneaten piece, including from the hoard, within a few hours
Why
Risks. The stone, stem and leaves contain cyanogenic glycosides. The flesh is sweet and juicy, so too much can cause soft droppings and weight gain.
Benefits. Juicy and a source of some vitamins and fibre.
Questions owners ask 2
Can hamsters eat nectarines, plums or apricots?
The flesh of these stone fruits can be offered in the same small amounts, but always remove the stone, and speak to your vet if a stone was chewed.
Can hamsters eat tinned peaches?
No. Tinned peaches are usually in syrup or juice, which adds sugar.
