Budgie · Greens & herbs
Can budgies eat parsley?
Yes, in small amounts. A board-certified avian vet lists parsley as safe, but it has caused sun sensitivity in ducks and ostriches that ate a lot, so keep it to a sprig mixed with other greens.
- Portion
- One small sprig (a few leaves)
- How often
- Two or three times a week, mixed with other greens
- Sugar
- 0.9 g / 100 g
How to serve it
- Wash well
- Offer a plain sprig of flat-leaf or curly parsley, or chop it
- Mix it with other greens rather than serving a pile of parsley
- Remove leftovers after a few hours
Why
Risks. Parsley contains natural compounds that can make skin more sensitive to sunlight. A 1988 report described parsley-induced photosensitivity in ostriches and, experimentally, in ducks. No cases in budgies have been reported, so the concern is large amounts, not a sprig.
Benefits. Parsley supplies beta-carotene, vitamin C and vitamin K and adds variety and scent to fresh food.
Questions owners ask 2
Is parsley toxic to budgies?
Not in normal amounts. It appears on some 'toxic' lists because of reports in ducks and ostriches that ate a lot of it, while a board-certified avian vet lists parsley as safe for pet birds. A sprig a few times a week is a sensible middle ground.
Can budgies eat parsley stems?
Yes, the soft stems are fine. Wash them and offer them with the leaves.
