Budgie · Greens & herbs
Can budgies eat iceberg lettuce?
Better not. Iceberg lettuce is mostly water with very little nutrition, so it fills a budgie up without adding much. It is not toxic, and a nibble is harmless.
- Portion
- Not recommended. If you offer any, keep it to a torn piece about 2 cm (3/4 in) across
- How often
- Rarely, if at all
- Sugar
- 2 g / 100 g
If your budgie already ate some
No action is needed. If droppings stay very watery for more than a day, or your budgie seems fluffed up, quiet or off its food, contact an avian vet, as that suggests illness rather than the lettuce.
How to serve it
- Offer romaine, kale or dandelion leaves instead
- If you do give iceberg, wash it first
- Use only a small torn piece
- Remove leftovers within a few hours
Why
Risks. Iceberg is not poisonous. The problem is that it is pale and watery and offers little, so it can crowd out more nutritious foods, and large amounts may briefly make droppings wetter.
Questions owners ask 2
Is iceberg lettuce poisonous to budgies?
No. It is not toxic, but avian vets do not recommend it because it is mostly water and has little nutritional value. Darker greens are a better use of a budgie's small appetite.
Will iceberg lettuce give my budgie diarrhoea?
It can make droppings look wetter for a few hours because of its water content. That is not true diarrhoea; ongoing loose droppings need a vet check.
