Can hamsters eat iceberg lettuce?

Better not

Better not. Iceberg lettuce is mostly water with very little nutrition, and vets advise leaving it out. Darker greens such as romaine are a better choice.

If your hamster already ate some

A nibble is not an emergency. Remove any leftover pieces, make sure fresh water and pellets are available, and watch the droppings for a day or two. Contact a vet if your hamster develops diarrhoea, a wet or dirty bottom, or stops eating.

How to serve it

  1. Offer a small piece of romaine or another darker leafy green instead
  2. Remove any iceberg leftovers from the enclosure

Why

Risks. Iceberg lettuce is mostly water and provides little nutritional value, so it takes up space in a tiny stomach without adding much. Watery leaves eaten in quantity can also soften droppings. It is not toxic.

Questions owners ask 1

Is iceberg lettuce poisonous to hamsters?

No, it is not toxic. Vets leave it out because it is mostly water and offers very little nutrition; darker leafy greens make better use of your hamster's small daily fresh-food allowance.
