Hamster · Greens & herbs
Can hamsters eat dandelion greens?
Yes, if unsprayed. A vet-reviewed guide lists dandelion greens as suitable for hamsters. Pick them only from places free of chemicals and animal traffic, and wash well.
- Portion
- One small leaf, about 3 cm (1¼ in) long, for a Syrian; half a small leaf for a dwarf.
- How often
- 2–3 times a week, rotating with other greens
- Sugar
- 0.7 g / 100 g
How to serve it
- Only pick from ground never treated with weedkiller, slug pellets or fertiliser, away from roads and dog-walking areas
- Wash thoroughly
- Tear into small pieces
- Introduce gradually if your hamster has not had it before
Why
Risks. The main risk is contamination of wild-picked plants with pesticides, herbicides or animal waste. Dandelion leaves are also relatively rich in calcium and, like other greens, can soften droppings if a lot is eaten at once.
Benefits. Rich in vitamins A and K and a source of calcium and fibre; hamsters often enjoy the bitter leaves.
Questions owners ask 2
Can I pick dandelions from my garden for my hamster?
Yes, as long as the area has never been treated with weedkiller, slug pellets or fertiliser and is not used by dogs, cats or wildlife. Wash the leaves well before feeding.
Are shop-bought dandelion greens OK?
Yes. Salad-grade dandelion greens sold for people are a convenient option. Wash them as you would any leafy green.
