Budgie · Greens & herbs
Can budgies eat spinach?
Yes, in small amounts. Spinach is nutritious and listed by vets as suitable, but it is rich in oxalate, which binds calcium, so offer it now and then rather than as the main green.
- Portion
- One or two baby spinach leaves, or about 1 teaspoon chopped
- How often
- Once or twice a week, rotated with other greens
- Sugar
- 0.4 g / 100 g
How to serve it
- Wash the leaves thoroughly
- Offer a whole baby leaf or chop it finely
- Serve raw or plainly steamed, with nothing added
- Rotate with lower-oxalate greens such as romaine, kale and dandelion
Why
Risks. Spinach is high in oxalic acid, which binds calcium and limits how much of the leaf's calcium a bird can absorb. Seed-heavy diets are already low in calcium, so spinach should be one green among many rather than a daily staple.
Benefits. Spinach provides beta-carotene, vitamin K, folate and iron.
Questions owners ask 2
Is spinach bad for budgies?
No. It is not toxic, and veterinary feeding guides list spinach among suitable foods for budgies. The caution is its oxalate content, which reduces calcium absorption, so it is best fed in rotation rather than every day.
Can budgies eat cooked spinach?
Plain steamed spinach is fine. Never offer spinach cooked with butter, salt, garlic or other seasonings.
