Budgie · Greens & herbs
Can budgies eat romaine lettuce?
Yes. Romaine is a good everyday green for budgies. Its darker leaves carry far more nutrition than pale iceberg lettuce, and most budgies enjoy shredding it.
- Portion
- A leaf piece about 5 cm (2 in) square, or 1–2 teaspoons finely chopped, as part of the day's fresh food
- How often
- Daily or most days, rotated with other greens and vegetables
- Sugar
- 1.2 g / 100 g
How to serve it
- Wash the leaf well under running water
- Use crisp, fresh leaves and discard wilted or slimy parts
- Offer a whole piece to shred, or chop it finely
- Remove uneaten leaves after a few hours
Why
Risks. Very few. Unwashed produce can carry pesticide residues or bacteria, and a large amount of watery greens can make droppings wetter for a while. Greens add to a pellet-based diet; they do not replace it.
Benefits. Romaine is low in calories and provides beta-carotene, which birds turn into vitamin A, plus vitamin K and folate. Vitamin A deficiency is common in seed-fed birds, so dark leafy greens are worth offering.
Questions owners ask 2
Can budgies eat romaine lettuce every day?
Yes. Romaine can be offered daily as part of a mix of vegetables and greens. Together, fresh foods should make up roughly a fifth to a quarter of what a budgie eats, with pellets as the base.
Is romaine better than iceberg lettuce for budgies?
Yes. Iceberg is mostly water and has little nutritional value, while romaine's darker leaves contain much more beta-carotene and other nutrients.
