Cockatiel · Fruit
Can cockatiels eat raisins?
Better not. Raisins pack a lot of sugar into a small bite and offer cockatiels little, and grape and raisin toxicity in dogs is still not fully explained, so fresh fruit is the safer choice.
- Portion
- Not recommended; use a small piece of fresh fruit instead
- Sugar
- 65.2 g / 100 g
If your cockatiel already ate some
One or two raisins do not call for emergency care. Keep an eye on your cockatiel's appetite, droppings and activity for a day or two, and call your avian vet if it becomes quiet, fluffed up, drinks much more than usual or has loose droppings.
How to serve it
- Choose fresh fruit as a treat instead
- Store raisins and baked goods containing them out of reach
- Read treat-mix labels for raisins and sugared fruit
Why
Risks. Raisins are dried grapes with the sugar concentrated, which is unhelpful for a species prone to obesity and fatty liver. Kidney damage from grapes and raisins is well recognized in dogs; birds have not been shown to be affected, but the cause is unknown.
Questions owners ask 1
Can soaked raisins be given to cockatiels?
Soaking adds water but does not remove the sugar or resolve the uncertainty about grape toxicity. Fresh fruit remains the better option.
