Can hamsters eat chocolate?

No — never feed

No. Chocolate contains theobromine and caffeine, stimulants that can cause tremors, heart rhythm problems, seizures and death in animals. A hamster's tiny body makes small amounts risky.

If your hamster already ate some

Call your vet or an animal poison helpline straight away, even if your hamster seems fine. Note the type of chocolate (dark, milk, white or cocoa) and roughly how much is missing. Rodents cannot vomit, so do not try home remedies. Remove any chocolate from the nest, and watch for restlessness, rapid breathing, trembling, wobbliness, diarrhoea or seizures.

Why

Risks. Chocolate's methylxanthines (theobromine and caffeine) overstimulate the nervous system and heart. Dark chocolate, baking chocolate and cocoa powder contain the most; white chocolate the least, though it is still sugary and fatty. No safe dose has been established for hamsters; the effects are documented mainly in dogs.

Questions owners ask 2

Is white chocolate safe for hamsters?

No. White chocolate has the lowest theobromine content, but it is still sugary and fatty and offers nothing a hamster needs. Treat all chocolate as off-limits.

My hamster ate a tiny crumb of chocolate. What should I do?

Phone your vet for advice. A crumb of milk chocolate may cause no problems, but hamsters are so small that professional advice is worthwhile, especially for dark chocolate or cocoa.
