Hamster · Snacks & drinks
Can hamsters eat alcohol?
No. Alcohol is rapidly absorbed and can cause incoordination, depression, breathing difficulty, tremors, coma and death in pets. For an animal as small as a hamster, even a lick matters.

If your hamster already ate some
Call your vet or an animal poison helpline immediately, because alcohol is absorbed quickly. Keep your hamster warm and quiet in a secure box on the way. Watch for wobbliness, weakness, slow breathing or unresponsiveness.
Why
Risks. Ethanol depresses the nervous system and disturbs blood chemistry. Beer, wine, spirits, liqueur chocolates, alcohol-soaked cakes, fermenting fruit and raw yeast dough (which produces alcohol as it ferments) are all sources.
Questions owners ask 2
Can hamsters eat fermented or overripe fruit?
Fruit that has started to ferment can contain alcohol and may also be mouldy. Remove old fruit from the enclosure promptly and only offer fresh pieces.
Is a drop of beer harmful to a hamster?
It can be. A hamster weighs a tiny fraction of what a person or even a small dog weighs, so a small amount of alcohol is a large dose for its size. Never offer alcohol.
